The Sierra Pacific Industries sawmill near Sonora closed last week, the third SPI sawmill to close in the Sierra Foothills this summer. What are the implications of this closure?
Listen to Capital Public Radio’s Insight program, which aired on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, to hear from Sierra Business Council’s President, Steve Frisch, Mark Pawlicki from Sierra Pacific Industries, David Edelson from The Wilderness Society, and District 2 Supervisor, Ray Nutting, as they describe the reactions to the mill closure, the cascading implications the closure will have in the community, and discuss what can replace the work of the mills in the future.

Heard this segment on the radio. Excellent conversation between reps on many sides of the issue. I particularly appreciate Frish’s occasional reframing of what all have in common, where the agreement is. Interesting how in the media the collaborative process never comes across as “sexy” as the conflict does. Conflict is easy. Commonality could also be easier if we began to focus on it, instead of fastening onto conflict. Good job, SBC!
Just interested:
Are we moving toward a more generic society as a result of closing down mills and forcing “green” use? Don’t get me wrong all of us need to be more green, but is shopping at Big Box Stores and eating at Fast Food really where we want to go? The days of small communities being able to support their mom & pop stores is decreasing rapidly. I see this leading to a decline in community resources and and “community” itself. How many people go to Reno and shop Moana Nursery and eat at Pam’s Glorified Ham & Eggs? We are being conditioned to go to Home Depot and In & Out.
