Sierra Leadership Institute (SLI)

Energy & Climate Program

We're looking for climate change and clean energy innovators who want to take a project or concept to the next level.
The June installation of SLI is currently complete. Please check back for additional opportunities to participate in Sierra Leadership Institute - Energy & Climate Program.

Climate change not only poses environmental challenges, it also creates economic opportunities for the Sierra Nevada region. In order to effectively harness these opportunities, the 2011 Sierra Leadership Institute – Energy & Climate Program is intended to build talent, create local investment opportunities, reduce energy spending, and build lasting and diverse climate-conscious networks within Sierra Nevada communities.

Sierra Business Council has been running the Sierra Leadership Institute for over a decade and has graduated almost 300 participants. The program has traditionally focused on skills in collaboration, facilitation, management, hosting and running meetings, communication, conflict resolution, stakeholder coordination, and general sustainability principles. Dozens of effective partnerships and community programs have emerged out of Sierra Leadership Institute, and the alumni have a tight network for on-going support and collaboration

The unique element behind the 2011 Sierra Leadership Institute is the design of the curriculum around a particular issue—in this case, energy and climate leadership. We will develop case studies and exercises specifically designed to deal with challenges in implementing energy projects or climate plans, and develop the skills and tools to move such projects forward.

2011 SLI Energy & Climate Program contains three components:

I. Leadership Training
The institute will shift its individual leadership focus to team-building and collaborative leadership skills.

II. Energy & Climate Literacy Training
The emphasis of this component will be to develop a shared foundation of technical and scientific issues, while building effective communications skills and strategies to ensure community wide buy-in for climate and energy action.

III. Project Planning
This component enables participants to work actively on a team to design and implement a climate or energy related project in the region. Instructors are available to provide assistance to project teams during this week and in the long-term.

Project concepts and ideas might involve but are not limited to:

  • Climate action planning
  • Energy efficiency and demand response
  • Renewable energy
  • Building/facility retrofits or benchmarking
