Saving the Sierra Voices of Conservation in Action
Location: North San Juan, CA *Sierra Nevada North Central (Nevada County) Contact: jesikah maria ross & Catherine Stifter info@savingthesierra.org Project Stage: Active (Multi-year) Next Milestone: Earth Day 2008: Hour-long Documentary National Broadcast
Saving the Sierra: Voices of Conservation in Action is a project funded through the California Council for Humanities that examines the role of communities in addressing the many issues facing the Sierra's future. Through public radio broadcasts, a website, a series of community audio workshops and forums, and a mobile "Story Booth" that will allow Sierra residents to record their stories of life throughout the Sierra Nevada, the multi-year project is shedding light on how community-based conservationists are working together for a better Sierra.
The project focuses on the role of conservation in preserving regional heritage and character while connecting people to the land and to each other. Some of these stories will be on National Public Radio. Material from the project was broadcast nationally on NPR's "Weekend America."
"The stories we've collected show what happens when people become champions of the places they love" said ross. "They become infused with a passion to preserve the land and get involved in sustaining their traditions and towns. It's inspiring to listen to and it will be great to bring these rural voices to public radio."
Saving The Sierra: Voices of Conservation In Action aims to build an statewide constituency that cares about the stewardship of the Sierra Nevada's cultural and natural resources and has the tools to implement creative solutions that meet a wide range of community needs. Saving The Sierra helps rural Sierrans connect with each other across geographic, political, and cultural divides on the common ground of conservation issues and how they are working at the dirt level to address them. It also enables Sierrans to reach out to the population centers downstream to help ensure an intact Sierra Nevada ecosystem and a sustainable way of life for rural communities.
A national hour-long documentary on the project is in the works for Earth Day 2008.
Project partner Sierra College Center for Sierra Nevada Studies’ role was to design and develop the companion website and to manage the mobile story booth. The college purchased the mobile recording equipment that will (at the conclusion of the project) be available for any campus recording projects, such as oral histories. Sierra College students and interns were trained to use these studios and they travel to regional events to provide workshops and recording opportunities. Sierra College also designed the project logo, some promotional materials, and arrange for the web hosting.
