Lassen National Forest Minnow Restoration Projects

The Lassen National Forest’s Almanor Ranger District has plans to embark on two restoration projects designed to provide desirable habitat for a number of mammal and bird species.

The FY07 Minnow Oak and Pine Enhancement DFPZ Project involves thinning conifers in order to maintain and encourage the sprouting of black oak and retain some of the larger pine trees. The thinning would leave some small pines and would also establish fuel breaks or defensible fuel profile zones.

The FY07 Minnow Aspen Enhancement Project is designed to restore aspen stands in two areas: Philbrook Lake and around Domingo and Buzzard Springs near Chester. Currently shading from white fir trees and deer and cattle grazing threaten these aspen stands. The restoration would include removing some conifers and building temporary fences to protect sprouting aspen from grazing.
