Funding MechanismsThe most important aspect of any open space program is how to fund it. At the local government level, as in private business, projects and resources follow the money. Our goal is to present the funding sources available to land conservation organizations, non-profits, local governments and citizen groups, so educated decisions can be made about which funding sources will work for their organizations or communities. Taxes, Benefit Assessment Districts, Bonds, Mitigation Fees, Special Districts, grant funding, voluntary revenue programs and varying fee structures form the groundwork of funding mechanisms for open space preservation. A variety of funding mechanisms for open space preservation and conservation provide the information communities need to decide what is available to them and what best fits their needs.
