Firewood GatheringFirewood gathering is a common year-round chore in for billions of people in forest communities worldwide, as firewood is their primary or traditional source of home heating and cooking fuel. In parts of the Sierra and other forested regions, pipe-delivered or truck-delivered energy such as gas or propane, and grid-tied electricity may be inaccessible, unreliable, or not cost-effective. Firewood gathering creates a market for using the by-products of fuels reduction, and at the same time provides local heating security, and supports local woodcutters and retailers, who benefit from this local energy harvest and delivery system. A full cord of firewood equals a volume of stacked wood measuring 4ft x 4ft x 8ft (128 cubic feet). Firewood is also used to power boilers for both heat and electrical power generation.
