Christmas TreesChristmas Trees are a Sierra forest product group that straddles agriculture, horticulture, timber harvest, and tourism. They are propagated, planted, and managed as ornamental horticulture, harvested under timber harvest tax and sold as inventory under wholesale or retail sales tax authority. Many Christmas tree farms in the Sierra have retail “choose and cut” plantations at which they also sell other items, and offer family–friendly activities for day-tourists. Farmers employ everything from plantation to natural harvest; complete harvest to stump culture that in effect prunes the tree but does not kill it; and wholesale to hybrid-retail operations. The Christmas tree industry brings significant income to Sierra economies. A Christmas tree’s relatively long growing cycle sequesters carbon, prevents soil erosion, and provides wildlife habitat. In this category you will find sustainable and environmentally responsible Christmas tree operations. |
