Starting with a week-long leadership training (the Sierra Nevada Youth Leadership Institute), students will engage in environmental education in the field, leadership training, review internship opportunities, engage in project planning and learn about community service options.  These focus areas are designed to prepare students with the skills needed to be effective contributors to their communities’ health as well as sustainable business efforts and inspire future action. While gaining experience interacting with peers from other regions, mentors and experienced leaders, students will also learn about the Sierra Nevada watershed and how this applies to community, economic and social health. As a follow up to the weeklong leadership training program, students will be encouraged to gain skills in the workplace, learn more about community service organizations, and how they can get involved.

High School youth are an underused resource when it comes to leadership, volunteerism and community service in most communities. In addition, students are in need of experience and training in order to enter the work force and to become viable contributors to community growth and development. The Sierra Nevada Youth Empowerment program can give students greater confidence and resources to make these steps forward. Sierra Business Council in is a unique position to help foster youth development in these areas through existing and developing partnerships, regional SBC membership and Sierra Leadership Institute Alumni. SBC can become a stakeholder in the youth development network and apply for funding to promote youth programs.

The goal of the Sierra Nevada Youth Empowerment Program is to create a trained High School youth action network that are engaged in their communities as leaders (or are in the process of becoming leaders), to provide training and opportunities to further develop skills for students to be able to contribute in a meaningful way throughout the rural Sierra and in urban regions in California within the Sierra Nevada watershed. SNYEP provides an overview of the connections between, Social, Economic and Natural resources and how effective leadership can balance these toward community health. A common connection can be made by urban and rural youth by understanding how they are linked through shared natural resources.
