The Sierra Nevada Carbon Cooperative is an investment in the Sierra Nevada.  SNCC will provide ‘value-added’ offsets from forest projects that, in addition to mitigating climate change by sequestering CO2, benefit the Sierra Nevada in other environmental, economic and social ways.  These co-benefits include:

• Cleaner, clearer and more abundant water.  Healthy Sierra forests will purify the water that supplies 60% of the drinking water for the entire state of California, and increase snow pack to maintain a more stable supply of water throughout the year.

• Reduced soil erosion.  Sierra forests help prevent sediment run-off, which clouds and pollutes our clear alpine lakes.

• Improved air quality.  Sierra forests help purify the air.

• Increased habitat for native species.  Sierra forests provide and buffer habitat for Sierra Nevada plants and animals, protecting the region’s biodiversity

• Increased open space and recreational opportunities for residents and tourists.  Conserving and restoring forests can provide new tracts of land for hiking, skiing and other recreational activities, while enhancing the character of the Sierra as a beautiful region

• More local, green jobs.  Forest projects require forest professionals to manage the properties as well as inventory and verify carbon stocks.

Because SNCC forest carbon projects provide these co-benefits, SBC will be able to command a higher price per ton of CO2, which will bring in revenue to fund more forest conservation and management and future forest carbon offset projects.
