Homewood Sustainability Plan
Skiing in the Sierra NevadasHomewood Mountain Resort, located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe sits 1200 acres large and is comprised of forest land, water bodies, wetlands, an existing ski resort development and surrounded by a community of long time locals and part time residents.
The redevelopment of the Homewood Mountain Resort presents tremendous potential for a new model in sustainable land use planning, a model that respects the environment and opens new doors to social, natural and financial equity. The term sustainability refers to Homewood’s ability to simultaneously improve the social, natural, and financial health of its proposed development and the surrounding community. By incorporating this “whole systems” approach to the planning process, Homewood will achieve a development that cares not only about its place in today’s world, but works to maintain a sustainable future. This is an opportunity to demonstrate how land use planning can take an existing development and make it better. Objectives - Community Outreach & Workshop Facilitation
- Identification, Design Assistance and Implementation Strategy for Sustainable Design and BMP Applicable to the Resort Redevelopment Project
- Project & Program Management-Meeting attendance, entitlement assistance
Process The creation of a draft plan allows for Homewood to address each sustainability measure. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and sustainable standards have been included in the draft plan of this process. This project, however, will not be confined solely to the guidelines of LEED certification. If it is believed that Homewood can implement other sustainable measures that can be effective in representing the goals of this project, which should be the driving force behind all decisions. As we have been selected to participate in the LEED ND Pilot Program, we will be required to submit documentation verifying Homewood’s compliance with the prerequisites for certification. We are currently enrolled in the LEED ND Pilot Program and continue to work with Homewood Ski Resort and a team of professionals as they proceed with breaking ground.
