Jefferson State Forest ProductsLocation: Hayfork, CA - *Sierra Nevada Region (Trinity County) Contact: Randy Bashaw (530) 628-1101 - Randy@JeffersonStateProducts.com What began as a combined economic development and fuels reduction project of The Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities™ Partnership (HFHCP), a program of Sustainable Northwest at The Watershed Research and Training Center, to make flooring from regional forest thinning is now the largest secondary wood manufacturing company in Trinity County, California. Secondary wood manufacturing: making lumber, plywood, paper and other timber products into finished goods, such as furniture, toys, containers, or structural components. Jefferson State Forest Products (JSFP) purchases lumber, whenever possible, from local small independent sawmills that produce lumber harvested from sustainably managed forests. "We start sourcing locally, then work outward," says purchaser Elizabeth Hoagland. "Locally, we buy raw lumber at the local sawmill here in town, Timber Creek Forest Products at Talrocca. Regionally, we buy hardwoods like maple and oak from Hardwood Specialty Products in Chico, and Auburn Hardwoods in Redding; we buy softwoods like Douglas fir from Trinity River Lumber Co. in Weaverville. Most of our maple is harvested in Oregon, usually within 150 miles of us. And we do buy from all over the U.S.; most of our oak comes from the east, because it is nearly impossible to find enough of it (already seasoned properly) in the west." And JSFP, in Hayfork, CA, now makes much more than flooring. Using mainly western hardwoods, including native heritage species, JSFP makes store fixtures, floral displays, and restaurant furniture. JSFP also makes and retails kitchenware, and cider presses. "So we use non-toxic and organic finishes custom-made developed by Paintmark in Redding," adds sales manager Carol Hickman. "Our vegetable bins are in many regional and natural foods stores and Co-ops in California and Oregon." "We specialize in custom design for sustainable businesses that have similar missions to ours, so it's a very personal way of doing business, even on a large scale. Wood that I touched is in Whole Foods all over the U.S., in the U.K., and Canada," says JSFP purchasing manager Elizabeth Hoagland. Paul Harton of the new Briarpatch Market in Grass Valley says "They made it so easy. They designed our smaller scale vegetable bins using my favorite wood, Pacific Madrone. Using sustainable natural materials from regional sustainable sources in our new building is one of the things that qualified us for LEED certification. I love working in this space." Recognizing that they are also a part of a larger rural forest communities and business network, JSFP is also a member of a marketing association, the Northwest Wood Products Association. "And," says Carol, "to complete the circle that began our initial concept, we make the benches that Sustainable Northwest at sells on their website, to help pay for this kind of business development in other communities."
