Defensible Space

Defensible Space in terms of fire safety is the area immediately around a structure that has been landscaped both to reduce fire risk, and so that firefighters have an adequate, reasonable, and relatively safe working envelope within which to work to protect the structure.

Defensible space fuels reduction work can be cost-shared with federal funds if the community has approved a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) as per the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003 (HFRA).
