Community-managed Forest

Community-managed forests and community-owned forests in 43 states comprise 4.5 million acres and provide outdoor recreation, protection of water supplies, community fire-breaks, wildlife habitat, educational opportunities, and timber and other forest products.

Significantly different from community parks or open-space management districts, these 3,000 plus community forests are not solely government responsibility; they are collaborative efforts of cities and towns to protect their forests from development and maintain their forests for multiple benefits .

For case studies and examples of working management plans, strategic plans, and governance structure for Community-owned forests, see www.communitiescommittee.org

In this category you will find Community-managed forests in the Sierra and those that address issues and conditions similar to the Sierra.
